hmm. If I may answer that. When you open a new Canvas you can choose how it's filled. One option is transparent. It looks like a grey chessboard then. That's transparent.
You also have to save it in a format that can "handle" this transparence. .jpg for example can't. It will just fill the transparent parts with white. You can use .gif for animations and .png for normal pictures.
